Linking to Sources in JSTOR

Follow the directions below to get links to articles, books, images or other items from the JSTOR database that will work later and from off campus.

  1. From the search results page, click on the title of the item to open the page for the item.
  2. Look for the Abstract and Details or Item Details section of the page. Click the right arrow icon to expand that section and look for a Remote Access URL. It may be at the top or bottom of that page section.
  3. If there is a Remote Access URL, select it and copy it (or click the copy icon to copy it).
  4. Test your link! Paste the address into a new private browser window to make sure it works. (You should be prompted to log in again in the new private browser window.)

NOTE: Citations generated using the Cite button in JSTOR do not use the Remote Access URL. If your instructor requires JSTOR links that work off campus, replace the URL in the citation with the Remote Access URL if there is one.

If you plan to post a Remote Access URL in D2L Brightspace, read about linking to library sources in D2L first.

What to do if there is no Remote Access URL

Not all items in JSTOR will have a Remote Access URL. For example, items marked as open access in JSTOR do not have Remote Access URLs.

If there is no Remote Access URL in the Abstract and Details or Item Details sections of the page — or if those page sections do not exist — use the jstor.org URL instead. The JSTOR URL is under the title at the top of the page.

Remember to test your link! Paste the address into a new private browser window to make sure it works. You should be able to access the item in JSTOR without logging in.
