Identity Theft and Fraud- Information for Victims of Identity Theft

  • File an identity theft report with your local law enforcement center*. This report will be helpful as you dispute the loans that were taken out under your name and is required to request that any enrollment in your name be dropped from Normandale’s records.
  • Submit the Identity Theft Appeal form. Include a copy of the police report (the complete report, not just the case number) and other supporting information.

    • If you were a past Normandale student: Please indicate that you were the victim of identity theft and indicate the term(s) that you did not enroll.
    • If you have never attended Normandale: Please indicate you were the victim of identity theft and request that all courses and charges are removed from any records associated with you.
  • Because whoever stole your identity has a lot of information about you, we encourage you to monitor your credit very carefully.  Visit the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office for information on how to protect yourself from identity theft and freeze your credit. It also links to the 3 credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion) with instructions on how to freeze your credit at each one. You can use the link above or search for “protect identity theft Minnesota”. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety provides Help for Crime Victims-Identity Theft on this site, which may also be useful to you as you move forward.
  • You will also want to contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243 to report that your FSA account has been compromised. You can also submit a complaint online or learn more about reporting ID theft to the Federal Trade Commission or Social Security Administration on their website.
  • If you are able to log into studentaid.gov, you should see a dashboard that shows “My Loan Servicers”. This will give you contact information for the loan servicer that holds any loans fraudulently taken in your name.
  • Contact the loan servicer and ask to speak to the department that manages fraud. You will tell them that your identity has been stolen and student loans were taken out under your name. They will guide you through the process to file a fraud report to work towards having your loans cancelled because someone else used your information to received federal student loans. Please be aware that the process to get your student loans cancelled may take months.
