Lali Williams grew up in North Carolina as the oldest of six siblings, where responsibility, resilience, and compassion were woven into everyday life. From a young age, she was inspired by her uncle, a dentist who dedicated himself to serving the community through volunteer work. As a high school student, Lali eagerly assisted him, developing a natural ability to anticipate his needs and gaining firsthand insight into the demands of the profession. What began as helping family soon grew into a deep passion for dentistry and the difference compassionate care can make.
Life, however, brought profound challenges. After the tragic loss of her father in a car accident and her sister’s devastating neck injury in a separate accident, Lali and her siblings moved to Minnesota to live with their mother. During this time, her mother faced serious health struggles of her own, making an already difficult season even heavier. Amid grief, uncertainty, and responsibility beyond her years, Lali could have easily put her dreams on hold. Instead, she held even tighter to them.
Determined to build a future rooted in purpose, Lali enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program at Normandale Community College. There, she found not only an education but also encouragement and belonging. Surrounded by instructors who believed in her potential and invested deeply in their students, she began to see that her story was not defined by hardship, but by perseverance. Their mentorship strengthened her confidence and deepened her commitment to the profession she loved.
During her time at Normandale, Dental Hygiene Instructor Stephanie Zarse introduced students to the Minnesota Dental Hygienists’ Association (MnDHA). After attending one of their events, Lali immediately felt a sense of connection. Eager to give back to the profession that had given her so much hope, she volunteered as a social media manager. Through dedication, leadership, and heart, she rose to become President of MnDHA just four years later, serving through April 2024 while also practicing as a Licensed Dental Hygienist at Tonka Smiles in Minnetonka.
Lali’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance. Through loss, change, and immense responsibility, she never let go of her passion. Instead, she allowed it to propel her forward. Her story is proof that when you remain committed to what sets your heart on fire, no obstacle is insurmountable. With faith, support, and determination, you can rise above life’s hardest moments and not only succeed, but lead and inspire others along the way.
