Normandale leads the way in Personal Finance education in the Minnesota State System

April is Financial Literacy Month and Normandale is committed to educating students about the importance of knowing how to manage their finances. This spring semester, Normandale has six sections of Personal Finance with approximately 200 students in the classes, which is far and away the highest total of any college or university in the Minnesota State System. There are a similar number of students that take the course every spring and fall semester.

Dan Norgard is one of four Normandale instructors who are teaching the course this semester in a variety of different formats for the convenience of students. “As a college, we don’t always know exactly what life will hold for our students once they walk out our doors,” said Norgard. “However, we do know one thing. Every student will need to manage their money. The Economics Department thinks it is crucial that they have the tools to understand how to budget, manage their money, be wise about credit, and pay their taxes.”

The Economics Department is once again partnering with Student Senate and Phi Theta Kappa to present the annual Financial Literacy Event on Tuesday, April 15 from 12 to 1:20 p.m. Autumn Ruff, Bank Manager of Associated Bank will share a presentation on avoiding financial fraud and identity theft.

“With the increased use of AI, financial scams are becoming more prevalent and more sophisticated,” stated Norgard. “It is important that our students, and. our community, is aware of how they can best protect themselves and their loved ones from these scams.”
