Normandale Theatre’s The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical was named one of four invited productions to the Region V Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) in Des Moines, Iowa on January 16-21.

Normandale is the only college/university from Minnesota to be on the invited production list joining Johnson County Community College, University of Central Missouri and University of Missouri. Region V represents college and universities from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical ran from October 12-14, 2023 and was director by Normandale Theatre Instructor Sean Byrd. The following is description of the story:

As the half-blood son of a Greek god, Percy Jackson has newly-discovered powers he can't control, a destiny he doesn't want, and a mythology textbook's worth of monsters on his trail. When Zeus's master lightning bolt is stolen and Percy becomes the prime suspect, he must find and return the bolt to prove his innocence and prevent a war between the gods. Adapted from the best-selling book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and featuring a thrilling original rock score, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is an action-packed mythical adventure!

Normandale’s most recent in-person invited production was The Wolves and Colossal in Sioux Falls, S.D, in January 2020. Other recent Normandale productions that have been invited to the Region V KCACTF have included She Kills Monsters (2018 in Des Moines, Iowa), The Clean House (2015 in Bloomington, Minn.) and Known But to God (2013 in Lincoln, Neb.).
