Today, it is more important than ever to be able to think critically, communicate effectively in writing, and appreciate literary expressions of varied cultural and artistic purposes. Our English offerings meet these goals.

The English Department provides courses in four distinct areas: Composition, Literature, Creative Writing and English for Academic Purposes (see English Courses).

Advantages of English courses at Normandale

  • Varied format and schedule options: Courses are offered in person, online and in hybrid format, and as daytime and weekly night and weekend classes
  • Transfer credits: Affordable courses meet varied goals in the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum
  • Writing Step-Up: A sequence of composition and English for Academic Purposes courses help all students to succeed, regardless of preparation level
  • Degree programs: Two associate degrees and a certificate program are offered in English.

Student opportunities

The English Department supports student opportunities including the Writing Center, Creative Writing Club, student literary magazine, and creative writing scholarships (see Student Opportunities).

Faculty qualifications

English faculty members work closely with students to meet individual needs. All instructors have advanced degrees. Many are active scholars and have received local and national awards for teaching and scholarship (see English Faculty).
