Normandale 2021 Creative Writing Patsy Lea Core Award Recipients Announced

The Patsy Lea Core Living Memorial Award in Creative Writing recipients were announced as part of a virtual ceremony on April 23, 2021. This was the 43rd annual version of the awards ceremony.

The first-place award winners were Emily Christian (Fiction) and Ashely Malecha (Poetry).

Jess Castrello finished second and Mia Thompson was third in the Fiction category. Lisa Ronan was second and Shelby Lengyel finished third in the Poetry category.  

The judges for the awards were Mike Alberti (fiction) and William Reichard (poetry).  

Alberti's stories have won the Gulf Coast Prize in Fiction, Howard Frank Mosher Short Fiction Prize from Hunger Mountain, and the Sweet Corn Prize form Flyway. He lives in Minneapolis where he works as the Managing Director for the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop.  

Reichard's seventh book, Our Delicate Barricades Downed was published in April 2021. His was a finalist for the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets, won a MN Voices Prize and had poems featured on NPR's Writers Almanac.
