Financial Aid for Summer

Students who plan to take courses over the summer are eligible for financial aid. Find everything you need to know about available opportunities.

Types of Aid

There are four general types of aid available for the summer session: Federal Pell Grant, Minnesota State Grant, MN Childcare Grants and loans.

If you are eligible for the Federal Pell grant, you may see two types of aid listed, the Pell grant and Pell Grant Additional (Pell addl). Pell grant is the remaining eligibility for the year and is not used in the fall or spring terms. Pell addl requires at least six aid eligible credits in order to be used in the summer term. Learn more about Pell grants.

If you are eligible for Federal Direct Loans and you did not use your full eligibility during the fall and spring term, you may have eligibility for these programs during the summer. See if you qualify for Federal Direct Loans.

If you are considering taking summer classes and want to see your financial aid award first, please email the financial aid office or call 952-358-8250.

Tuition Deferral

There are scenarios where a student may qualify to receive a deferment or payment plan options through the Payments and Billing Office. See if you qualify for a deferral. Please refer to Payment Arrangements and Payment Arrangement Deadlines for more information.

Important Dates to Remember

August 1 - Last day to submit a loan request (electronic or paper) for Summer 2022.

Changing Your Schedule

Financial aid adjustments due to class schedule changes

If you decide to add a course after fifth day of the first summer term, your Pell Grant CANNOT be adjusted for the increase in credits.

If you drop a course and add another course that is the same number of credits after the fifth day of the first summer term, your Pell Grant will be negatively affected, as your added course will not be recognized.

If you drop any courses after the fifth day of the term, you will be required to repay part or all of your summer aid.

Caution

You are required to be enrolled in at least six credits (not including withdrawals) at the time of any loan disbursement. If you are not, we cannot disburse the funds and may have to return any loan funds previously disbursed for summer.
