Biology Lab Course Information

Spring 2026

General comments about biology classes with labs:

  • A 3-credit biology class, regardless of whether it is delivered on campus, hybrid, or online, has the equivalent of 2 hours of lecture (3 credits) and 3 hours of lab (1 credit) per week.
  • A 4-credit biology class, regardless of whether it is delivered on campus, hybrid, or online, has the equivalent of 3 hours of lecture (3 credits) and 3 hours of lab (1 credit) per week.
  • A 5-credit biology class, regardless of whether it is delivered on campus, hybrid, or online, has the equivalent of 4 hours of lecture (3 credits) and 3 hours of lab (1 credit) per week.
  • For on-campus courses all lectures and labs will meet on campus.
  • For completely online asynchronous courses the lectures and labs are completely online and you may need to pick up a lab kit (BIOL 1100 and 2041 courses) at the Biology Lab Front Desk (S 1360). See below for more instructions.
  • Labs are scheduled on campus.
  • Small mammal and organ dissection are required regardless of the delivery method.

Lab kits for online courses

Below is more information on lab kits for Completely Online Asynchronous Courses:

BIOL 1100  - Mostly Online or Completely Online -Asynchronous Courses

Students enrolled in a completely online asynchronous BIOL 1100  lab course should come to the Biology Lab Front Desk (S 1360) to pick up an online lab kit and/or to replace missing/broken/emptied lab kit components. 

When you come to pick up your labkit, please bring the following:

  • Your Normandale student ID card
  • Your course name, number, and professor's information
  • Replacement Parts
    • If you need to replace any missing, broken, or used components, bring your Normandale student ID, course name, number, and professor's information

Deadline to Pick Up Lab Kits

All lab kits must be picked up by week 1 of the semester.

Pick up location and dates

Lab Kit pick-ups are available one week before the semester begins (week of January 5th for Spring 2026) and are available during the following times:

One week before the semester begins:

  • Monday, January 5 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Tuesday, January 6 – 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • Wednesday, January 7 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Thursday, January 8 – 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • Friday, January 9 – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Week One of the semester:  

  • Monday, January 12 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Tuesday, January 13 – 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Wednesday, January 14 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Thursday, January 14 – 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Friday, January 16 – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Week Two of the semester:  

  • Monday, January 19 – CAMPUS CLOSED
  • Tuesday, January 20 – 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Wednesday, January 21 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Thursday, January 22 – 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Friday, January 23 – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Week Three of the semester:  

  • Monday, January 26 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Tuesday, January 27 – 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Wednesday, January 28 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Thursday, January 29 – 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Friday, January 30 – 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Students will need to check kit contents against an inventory sheet and return the signed sheet before leaving the pick-up area.  This will take about 5-10 minutes.

If a student is unable to come to campus, their lab kit can be mailed to a street address in the lower forty-eight United States. Lab kits cannot be mailed to post office boxes, to Alaska or Hawaii, or to locations outside the United States.  

For full semester courses students should contact their instructor no later than the first day of class to request a mailed lab kit.

For late start courses students should contact their instructor no later than two weeks before the first day of class to request a mailed lab kit.

BIOL 2041 Mostly Online or Completely Online - Asynchronous Courses 

Students enrolled in a mostly online or completely online asynchronous BIOL 2041 lab course should come to the Biology Lab Front Desk (S 1360) to pick up an online lab kit during the seventh or eighth week of class and are available during the following times:

When you come to pick up your labkit, please bring the following:

  • Your Normandale student ID card
  • Your course name, number, and professor's information
  • Replacement Parts

Labkits distribution will begin during week 7 ( week of February 23rd). All lab kits must be picked up by Week 10 (Week of March 16th) of the semester.

  • Friday – February 27 - 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Week Eight of the semester:  

  • Monday, March 2 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Tuesday, March 3 – 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Wednesday, March 4 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Thursday – March 5 - 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Friday – March 6 - 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Week Nine of the semester:  Spring Break – NO CLASES/LABS. The lab will be closed, but you can still pick up kits. Please ring the doorbell outside the BLC for assistance during the following times

  • Monday, March 9 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Tuesday, March10 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Wednesday, March11 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Thursday – March 12 - 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Friday – March 13 - 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Week Ten of the semester:  

  • Monday, March 16 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Tuesday, March 17 – 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Wednesday, March 18 – 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Thursday – March 19 - 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Friday – March 20 - 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
