Normandale awarded MLK Day of Service Grant
Normandale Community College was awarded one of four $500 mini-grants by Minnesota Campus Compact for the 2009 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Challenge. The Corporation for National and Community Service administers the MLK Day of Service each year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The volunteers are given basic instructions and a final goal, but it is up to them to decide on how the goals will be accomplished. It is a challenge to mobilize students to complete service projects on their college campus while reflecting on Dr. King's life. Normandale is working on rallying at least 100 students to participate in these community projects and join in the remembrance of Dr. King's vision, according to Service Learning coordinator Kelly Norri. "The MLK Day Challenge unifies diverse participants around a service project and provides opportunities for participants to reflect upon, honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," Norri said. Other recipients of the grant included Dunwoody College of Technology, Concordia University and William Mitchell College of Law.
