Russell Smiley

Popular Normandale Community College instructor Russ Smiley passed away on March 10 after he became ill during a school activity on March 8.

Smiley taught at Normandale for 25 years, and was instrumental in developing the Internal Healing Arts Program.  He taught Tai Chi Instructor Certification Trainings nationally and internationally for Arthritis, Diabetes and Osteoporosis. Smiley embodied the spirit and energy of health sciences and was recognized by students and faculty for his teaching and service to the community. 

Smiley received the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2006, the Roueche/NISOD Faculty Award in 2009 and was the recipient of many Golden Apples Awards, an award that demonstrates Normandale student’s appreciation for their instructors.

He was married to Carole Smiley (also a health and wellness practitioner), whom he met in college. On April 26, Normandale held a ceremony for Smiley on campus celebrating his life.
