Four areas of study
The English Department offers a range of courses in four distinct areas designed to improve writing, critical thinking, and understanding of literature.
- Composition: writing for varied purposes and audiences
- Literary Studies: studying and writing about literature and its contexts
- Creative Writing: writing original, imaginative works and studying established literary works
- English for Academic Purposes: a range of courses in reading, writing, speaking and listening for non-native speakers of English
Degrees and transfer
Normandale's English classes serve students seeking two-year degrees or planning transfer to four-year programs, and they meet various goals of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum. The department also offers several specific associate's degrees in writing and literary studies (see Degrees and Certificates).
