The following message was sent out yesterday to campus CAOs and CIOs. As this information filters out through your existing campus communication channels, we wanted to provide some additional follow-up details that may address some questions that different audiences may have.
Faculty Members, Faculty Developers and Campus Trainers:
Minnesota State staff have tentatively scheduled with D2L for our migration to occur on June 2, 2018. The Learning Environment Committee (Standing) of the ASA Technology Council will be involved in this planning. We expect that you will experience this move to D2L's cloud as a normal upgrade, with some additional features and improvements that will be communicated to you prior to the move. This migration will not change how you or your students login and access D2L Brightspace. You will not need to participate in migration activities, as those migration activities will be performed for you.
Campus Site Administrators (CSAs):
We expect that you and your faculty will experience this move to D2L's cloud as a normal upgrade, with some additional features and improvements. As noted in the memo, each institution will continue to maintain administration for their own instance of the Brightspace Learning Environment. You should expect to enjoy the same level of administration you experience today.
D2L has made commitments to deliver a mechanism to display the courses you've enrolled in at other Minnesota State institutions. Although your course will be located on the campus instance where the course is being offered, you will be able to quickly jump from one campus instance to another without having to login again. We are expected to have this functionality no later than December 2019.

Migrating to D2L’s Cloud Services
As recommended by the Academic and Student Affairs Technology Council, Minnesota State staff has been negotiating terms and conditions of Minnesota State’s existing contract with D2L to allow Minnesota State to migrate from our existing self-hosted environment to D2L’s cloud hosted services. Migrating to D2L’s cloud services ensures that students, faculty, and staff will have continued access to the most current releases of the Brightspace Learning Environment.
Minnesota State’s Board of Trustees approves D2L’s contract be extended to August 31, 2023.
The current contract for D2L’s Brightspace Learning Environment, Minnesota State’s enterprise learning management system, expires on August 31, 2022. On Wednesday, October 18, 2017, the Board of Trustees approved our request to amend the existing contract to allow Minnesota State to utilize D2L’s cloud services and extend the contract until August 31, 2023.
What should campuses expect?
Once the contract is fully executed, the migration from our existing self-hosted environment to D2L’s cloud hosted services is tentatively scheduled for June 2018. Each institution will continue to maintain administration for their own instance of the Brightspace Learning Environment. Please stay engaged with your campus academic technology teams as details regarding this migration are outlined over this academic year.
