Getting Started

To get started in an online course, you will need:

1. A metnet email account
If you haven't already initiated your account, open a Web browser on your computer and go to http://www.metnet.edu/email/howtoinitiate.html and follow the directions. Your instructor will send all class email messages to this account. You can choose to forward email from this account to one you use more often.

2. A computer with Internet access
Go to http://www.normandale.edu/D2L and select the link "Click here to do a system check" to find out if your computer is set up properly.

3. A username and password
On the letter you received from the Normandale Admissions Deparment, find your Tech ID, an eight-digit number that starts with two zeroes. Then, go to http://www.normandale.edu/D2L and type that number into the Username box. Then, read the directions on the same page to determine your password. To start, it will be a six-digit number that represents your birthdate. Type in the number and click Login. After you sign on, click the link to My Password on the left side of the page and change your password to something you'll remember. Make it at least six characters and a combination of letters and numbers.

4. Textbooks
Almost all online courses require you to purchase at least one textbook.
Go to http://www.normandalebookstore.com and click on the Textbooks tab to select and pay for your books. There is a link to a Textbooks Tutorial on the left side of the page if you have problems. Choose to have books delivered by UPS or pick them up on campus.

5. Basic computer skills
If you've been able to perform all the tasks on this list, you probably have the skills to get started in an online course. Some other skills you may need (they're different from course to course) include keyboarding (typing), browsing the Internet, attaching files to email, and cutting and pasting text from one computer page to another. While some online courses require specialized computer programs, most will not require that you purchase additional software. Still, you should check with your instructor about what's required in the course you're taking.
