As a top provider of transfer students in Minnesota, Normandale has traditionally been a starting point for many Elementary Education and Special Education four-year graduates. Across the state, the need has recently grown for Special Education teachers.
Normandale is one of the few two-year colleges in the state that offers a Special Education Foundations Transfer Pathway associate degree guaranteeing automatic admission into any Minnesota State university that offers the degree. Minnesota State, Mankato and Normandale offer a seamless transfer option, which allows you to finish a bachelor's degree on Normandale's campus in the Partnership Center.
"We have designed the program to allow students to finish all of their generals and take a series of courses in education and special education that are part of Minnesota State, Mankato's program," said Normandale Director of Teacher Education Linette Manier. "The Normandale-Minnesota State University, Mankato partner program prepares you for the field and is the most affordable Special Education option in the state."
Manier is hoping to draw more students who want to be in the field and already have similar experiences. Examples of people who are good candidates for this degree include people working as personal care assistants, nursing assistants, nannies for children with disabilities, or those who have worked with or have a family member on the autism spectrum.
According to the CareerWise Minnesota State employment page, the job growth rate of Special is over 4%, and there are many school districts looking for the right people for these important positions.
"Students with disabilities have difficulty learning for one reason or another, whether it is behavioral or cognitive disabilities, or just not learning to read," said Manier. "If you are motivated intrinsically by helping people and like to work with students who need more one-on-one or small group help, this is the program and field for you."
