Normandale English Department Presents Annual Patsy Lea Core Awards

Normandale Community College Foundation, in coordination with the Normandale English Department, presented the 2019 Patsy Lea Core Living Memorial Awards in April.

The following is a list of winners in the poetry and fiction categories:   

Poetry
1st: Autumn Cooper 
2nd: Jessica Zick   
3rd: Fran O'Brien;   

Fiction 
1st: Katie Miller-Chang 
2nd: Elizabeth Kinney 
3rd: Margaret Dahl  

A reading was held on April 23, Shakespeare's birth- and death-day, in the Kopp Student Center Garden Room. The feature readings were done by the student winners, as well as by contest judges Paige Riehl (poetry) and Carter Meland (fiction).  

Paige Riehl is the author of the recent poetry collection Suspension (Terrapin Books, 2018) and the poetry chapbook Blood Ties (Finishing Line Press, 2014). She won the 2012-2013 Loft Mentor Series in Poetry and the 2011 Literal Latté Prize for Poetry. She is a mentor with the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop and the Poetry Editor for Midway Journal. She teaches at Anoka-Ramsey Community College.  

Carter Meland is the author of the novel Stories for a Lost Child (Michigan State University Press, 2017), which was a finalist for the 2019 Minnesota Book Awards, and his fiction appears in such journals as Yellow Medicine Review, Lake: Journal of Arts and EnvironmentFiction Weekly, and Fiddleblack. Of Minnesota and White Earth Anishinaabe heritage, he teaches in the Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota.
