Normandale Community College Coordinator of Dual Enrollment and Perkins Robb Lowe recently received a 2015 Association for Career and Teaching Education (ACTE)/Region III Career Guidance Award. Lowe was selected above other candidates from Region III, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin.

The award recognizes guidance counselors and career development professionals who have made significant contributions to advocate, educate and communicate the value of CTE as a viable career option to a variety of audiences in their communities.

Lowe and four other regional winners will be eligible for the national ACTE 2015 Career Guidance Award, which will be presented at the ACTE Career Vision Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana to be held on November 18-22, 2015. He will also be recognized at the upcoming Minnesota CTE Works Conference on November 5, 2015.

Over the past 25 years, Lowe has developed a reputation as an influential leader in career counseling. He counseled 15 years at the secondary level with the St. Paul School System, and has been at the postsecondary level at Normandale since 2004.

Lowe has advised and counseled thousands of youth and adults in academic, career, and personal domains both individually and in groups, and has worked with diverse populations the majority of whom were at-risk due to economic, education, or personal challenges.

He stresses to students the important of knowing yourself, the work environment, and making good decisions. Lowe also encourages students to take an honest look at themselves and not to overlook career and technical education options.

As one student states, "Robb pointed me in the right direction and laid out what I had to do to reach my goals. He had my back every step of the way and helped me graduate in two years."

With his guidance, the programs Lowe oversees have followed innovative pathways and doubled from prior enrollment rates. His responsibilities include Concurrent enrollment, articulated high school to college agreements, On Line College in the High Schools (OCHS), and Post-secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO). In addition, Lowe works with course equivalencies and prior learning assessment including Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and College Level Examination Program (CLEP).

Robb (Lowe) is an exceptional leader who is committed to career and college readiness for all students," said Kara Mueller, CTE director, and Robert Metz, superintendent at St. Louis Park Public Schools.
