Placement Testing

Normandale's placement testing process is used to determine a student's readiness for specific college courses. Placement testing measures reading, writing, and mathematics skills and is used to assist students with the selection of appropriate courses to help assure a student's success upon entering Normandale. Placement tests are not timed and provide immediate results that predict college readiness.

A student may be eligible for placement test waivers based on score reports from ACT, SAT, Mn Comprehensve Assessnent (MCA), Advance Placement (AP) College Level Examination Program (CLEP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or completion of college-level coursework from and accredited college or university.

Preparing for Placement Tests

Information is available on how to prepare for the placement tests.

Understanding your Score Reports

An Admissions Representative can review your score report with if you need help understanding what the placement results mean (PDF). The results are used to determine initial course placements in reading, writing and mathematics. Your assessment results in reading and writing are valid for three years, math results are valid for two years.

College-level courses at Normandale are numbered 1000 and above.

Developmental courses or below college-level courses, are numbered below 1000. Some students may receive placement into developmental courses. While these courses do not count towards a college degree they do count towards eligibility for financial aid, insurance and academic progress.

An Adult Basic Education (ABE) score (PDF) indicates a student's basic skill level in reading, writing or math will need improvement.  Recommendations for community resources will also be available to assist the student in improving these skills.   Students with ABE results in either reading or writing should see a Normandale Representative to determine the best options for moving forward.

Normandale offers an excellent program through the Department of English called English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to help students prepare for the many English language demands of their future academic careers. Lack of English skills will not be a barrier to admission or participation. Students whose first language is not English may begin with the Accuplacer ESL test. It includes sections on Reading Comprehension, Language Usage, Sentence Meaning. The placement tests will place you into the correct level of our program, the level where you will be most successful.
