Students entering the nursing program are expected to meet the MnSCU Performance Standards for Entry-Level Nursing Programs. These technical standards are required abilities for effective performance in MnSCU nursing education programs. The standards are compatible with the scope of practice as defined by the Minnesota Board of Nursing. The examples show how a standard may be applied in entry-level nursing education programs. The examples listed are for illustrative purposes only, and not intended to be a complete list of all tasks in an entry-level nursing program. Reasonable accomodations to meet standards may be available for otherwise program-qualified individuals with disabilities. Application Requirements Fall 2010

For Fall 2010 Applicants

Students applying to the nursing program must take the National League for Nursing pre-entrance exam. Testing will be scheduled beginning in November 2009. Specific test dates and times are listed below.  Please register to take this test with NLN at https://www.nlnonlinetesting.org.  NLN pre-entrance test scores are valid for 2 years.  Students may submit an application to the nursing program to Betty Blazer, Health Sciences Enrollment Manger, at any time.  If you have taken the NLN pre-entrance exam last year and do not intend to retake this test, please indicate that on the application form. All admission requirements must be completed prior to the February 1, 2010 application deadline.

Students who are applying to the Nursing program MUST take this pre-test exam.  Student who are applying to the PN Mobility Program are not required to take this exam.

I. General Admission Process

Applicants new to Normandale Community College must complete the Normandale general application form and include a $20 application fee to the Office of Admissions.  Upon receipt of the general application form and application fee, students sign up for course readiness testing in math, reading and English.  Course readiness tests determine the appropriate placement for the applicant in general college courses.  For assistance with any questions and/or guidance in the application process, prospective students can visit with an admissions representative.  Currently enrolled or previously enrolled students should meet with a counselor.

II. Nursing Program Admission Process: 

A. Program Admission Requirements

Application deadline is February 1st for admission into the fall semester of the same year.  Students wishing to petition an exemption of these requirements must do so prior to the application deadline date of February 1st.

The following requirements must be met before the application to the nursing program can be processed:

1. Be currently registered as a nursing assistant with the Minnesota Department of Health. (Work experience in the health field is highly recommended.)

2.  Have a minimum cumulative 3.00 grade point average (GPA) on all college-level (1000+level) courses. Those with a previous baccalaureate degree may satisfy this requirement with a minimum cumulative 3.00 on the most recent 30 credits of undergraduate level course work, including post-degree course work.
 
3.  Within the past two years, have completed a math course at the level of at least MATH 0700 with a C grade or higher, or have placed into college level math (1000+) level on the math section of the Course Readiness Assessments. (Medical dosage courses do not meet the math requirement).

4.  Have completed at least 20 semester credits of college level (1000+)course work or have placed into READ 1106 or above on the reading section of the Course Readiness Assessments.

5. Have completed the following general education courses with a grade of C or higher, ENGC 1101 Freshman Composition; CHEM 1050 Foundations of Organic and Biochemistry; and BIOL 1141 Human Anatomy

6.  Take the NLN Pre-Admission Exam. Composite score of 110 is recommended.  This online computerized exam will assist in admission decisions by providing a reliable, common basis for evaluating students academic ability. The exam tests basic verbal, math, and science skills at a high school level. Each test will be one hour each with five minutes between each exam. See below for the NLN Pre-Admission Exam Schedule.

7. Complete a writing Sample.  Students will be asked to submit a writing sample in response to a specific question at the time of the NLN Pre-Admission Exam.  One hour will be alotted for this exercise.

This exam is for applicants to the nursing program who are ready to apply fall 2010 at Normandale Community College and will last approximately four (4) hours.  The exam includes verbal, science, and math components, as well as a writing sample.  

Applicants will register and pay for the exam online.  The cost of the exam is $80 and is nonrefundable. A practice review guide is available for purchase.  To register for the exam and order a review guide use the following online address: https://www.nlnonlinetesting.org/pax/

 Applicants applying to take this exam are required to read and agree to the Refund and Rescheduling policy as printed below.

Refunds: All costs and fees associated with NLN exams are NON REFUNDABLE

Rescheduling: Requests to reschedule must be made at least three (3) weeks prior to the exam date for which you are registered.  Log into the Registration System using your login name and password.  A $15 rescheduling fee will be assessed each time you reschedule an exam date.

Repeating the exam:  Your must wait six (6) months before repeating an exam. Examinees will not be permitted to retest before this time.

B. Submission of Nursing Program Application

The Nursing Program Application Form may be submitted to the Health Sciences Manager at any time; however, the application will not be considered complete until all of the nursing application requirements have been met. The application can be mailed to:

The admissions committee composed of faculty from the nursing department will review and score each application.

Applicants will be offered admission to the Normandale Community College Nursing program based on a ranked score.

D. Application Notification

Applicants will be notified in writing on April 15th. Candidates will have two weeks to accept or decline the admission offer. If a response is not received within the time alloted, the seat will be considered as declined.

Students who were not admitted must reapply to the nursing program for another year.

NOTE:  Throughout the nursing program CPR for the health care provider, immunizations and criminal background checks must remain current.  Progression through the program is dependent upon a grade of C or higher in all program requirements.

Mission Statement

About the Department

The Nursing program prepares graduates for full participation as members of health care teams in diverse communities. Graduates are qualified to take National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nurse Licensure. This program is committed to quality, integrity, active life-long learning, student success, alliances and community service.

Normandale Community College offers the Associate in Science degree in Nursing as a two-year program located within the health sciences division. The Nursing program requires four semesters to complete and begins each Fall semester. Graduates will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX) and to apply to the Minnesota Board of Nursing (612-617-2270) for Nursing licensure. The passing rate for the licensure exam averages above 90 percent.
