Fall Semester Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will Normandale Community College be open for Fall Semester 2020?
A: YES. Normandale will be open for the Fall Semester. Most of our many high-quality courses will be offered in online formats, as will student services and other student resources. For the safety of all students, employees, vendors and visitors, on-campus activity will be limited.
Q: Will there be a parking fee charged to students in Fall Semester 2020?
A: Normandale will not charge a parking fee during the fall semester.
Q: What is the process if I am coming to campus?
On Monday, August 10, Normandale started using a COVID-19 screening questionnaire mandated by Minnesota State for employees, students, and visitors coming to campus.
Anyone coming to campus is required to wear a face covering based on an executive order from Governor Walz and guidance from the Minnesota Health Department (MDH) and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If you are coming for one of our limited number of in-person courses, or to use the campus resources listed below, please use the College Services Entrances (door #1 by Parking Lot #1). It is the only available entrance to campus buildings. A Public Safety officer will monitor the entry and ask you to sign in and present your ID when you enter the building.
Q: What is the process if I am coming to campus?
If you use your driver's license to check in and check out of campus, the college will have access to your name and address only. No other information is available. Your name and address are retained in the event that there is a need for contact tracing.
Q: Will I be safe if I am attending an in-person course in the fall?
All classrooms and meeting rooms have been evaluated and assigned a safety occupancy maximum based on physical distancing guidelines. The maximum occupancy numbers will be posted outside each classroom and meeting room. Computer and science labs also have modified occupancy to assure physical distancing. All classrooms will be disinfected after scheduled use. Physical distancing of at least six feet will be maintained in classrooms, and face coverings are required.
Q: What do I need to do to be safe on campus?
You must follow the following practices:
- Wear a cloth face covering when you are in any campus building, including classrooms,
- Physical Distancing by maintaining at least six (6) feet of distance from other individuals at all times
- Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water frequently throughout the day, but especially at the beginning and end of your time on campus, before eating, and after using the toilet
Q: What is the format for fall semester courses?
Almost all of Normandale's 1,200+ course sections will be fully online. This is the safest and best way to prepare for possible additional stay-at-home orders of unknowable duration. All registered students will receive communications regarding any course schedule changes.
Q: How will online courses work?
Online courses may be delivered in the following formats:
- Synchronous - meets online at specified times as scheduled
- Asynchronous - does not have specified online meeting times
Online courses will incorporate D2L. Click on Normandale's D2L Homepage for more information. You can also go to a Student Guidance webpage created by Minnesota State to look at some of the resources that can help you succeed in online courses.
Q: How will face-to-face courses work?
Courses that require some face-to-face components will take place in a way that meets physical distancing guidelines. The face-to-face experiences in these courses will incorporate protocols for check-in, cleaning, distancing, and tracking. If a course requires significant face-to-face interaction in order to meet learning objectives, the course will not be offered for Fall Semester 2020.
Q: What if my major requires face-to-face experiences as part of my academic program?
We are examining all options to make sure we meet minimum requirements for courses that are part of programs with accrediting bodies that mandate certain face-to-face obligations or require face-to-face assessment to obtain certifications. Normandale and Minnesota State are in constant communication with accreditation agencies to make sure we stay within the standards and maintain approval. There are and will continue to be separate communications to students in programs with these accreditation requirements.
Q: How do I know if my face-to-face class is being changed to online?
Registered students will receive communication regarding schedule changes. Scheduling details are available any time through e-Services, and changes can be online through August 28.

Q: Will Student Services be available?
YES. All student services will be available in the Fall Semester. Student services will be provided online. The recently launched Student Portal is a great resource to find key links to all of the student service areas and timely announcements to help you succeed! The Student Services website is also a great resources to find answers to key questions you have.
Q: What services will be open on campus during the Fall Semester?
Services that are available on campus include:
- Campus Cupboard - Fall hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday. The Campus Cupboard is currently located in College Services C 1180.
- Library - Open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7:45 p.m., and 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Friday
- Computer Lab - Open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in College Services, 2nd Floor
Campus building hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.
Q: What if I don’t have access to the technology I need for online courses?
There are several options:
- Use the new computer Lab on the 2nd floor of Colleges Services, available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Check the resources that IT Services has provided regarding cell phone hotspots, resources for reduced-rate data access and Wi-Fi.
- Normandale has also undertaken a project to extend the campus WiFi network out into parking lots 1 and 2. As a first step, WiFi access is now available in the parking spots closest to the front of the College Services building.
Q: Can I register for fall semester courses now?
YES. If you are new student visit our Admissions Page to get started. If you are a current student, register by going to e-Services. Q: If I am taking credits at Normandale, will they transfer to another college or university?
YES. Normandale is a top transfer institution for Minnesota State colleges and universities, University of Minnesota and private colleges and universities in Minnesota. We have 13 different bachelor's degrees offered through partner universities on our campus, more transfer pathways to Minnesota State universities than any other two-year college in Minnesota, and offer the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MNTC).
