The History Department promotes the study, teaching and assessment of historical developments that created our present world. Our goal is to help students understand the historical past so that they can better fulfill their roles as historical actors in creating our future society.
The Department offers basic survey courses in American history and the history of world civilizations. Each of these is a full two-semester course, although students are able to take a single a semester. Students are encouraged, but not required, to take these courses in chronological order.
In addition to these survey courses, a one-semester course in Minnesota history, which emphasizes the social, political,m cultural and economics history of the state, and a one-semester course in the history of the family with a cross-cultural perspective, are also a part of the regular offerings.
Finally, the Department offers occasional one-semester topics courses in various phases of American and world history.
History courses do fulfill a number of requirements for the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, as well as for Normandale graduation requirements. History is a solid major and Normandale history faculty are well-equipped to guide students who are intent upon majoring in this discipline.
