The Normandale Community College Psychology Department will host one of the most renowned psychologists in world today, Dr. Mark Snyder, to do a presentation titled "The Kindness of Strangers: Reflections on the Psychology of Helping and Being Helped" on Thursday, November 15 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Lorenz Fine Arts Auditorium.
When and why do people help others? Fifty years of research on the "bystander effect" has demonstrated that when people witness an emergency, they often just "stand by" and do nothing. On the other hand, millions of people every year take the initiative to volunteer to help others in need.
Dr. Snyder, who is a professor at the University of Minnesota, has spent the better part of his career thinking about and researching this paradox. In this presentation, he will discuss how reconciling these two perspectives has stimulated great advances in understanding, research, and application.
