We launched the new library systems software on January 31, 2019.

Known Issues

Online Study Room Reservations

From January 24 until later in the semester, study room reservations can only be made in person or over the phone during library hours. We are working on testing and implementing a new online system for study room reservations.

Online Catalog for Course Reserves

From January 29 until later in the semester, there will be no online catalog of course reserves items, but reserves will be available for checkout. Ask librarians or library staff for help finding reserve materials. 

Combined Search Results

After the systems migration on January 29, Combined Search will have a different interface, content index, and search algorithm. We spent a decade optimizing our previous Combined Search system, and it will take us time to customize and improve the new system. Some database content previously discoverable in Combined Search may not be discoverable in the new Combined Search system. Additional content will be added on a regular basis.

What is happening?

The software systems used to run the library and search for resources are being updated. To do this, there will be a short software freeze period when some library services will be limited. After January 29, we will use the new system.

When is this happening?

From January 24 - 29, the current version of Combined Search, the Library Catalog, and your online Library account will be "frozen."
On January 29, we will start using the new system.

Why is this happening?

All Minnesota State libraries are participating in this required library systems migration. We have used our current software system for 15 years. The new system is more customizable and new features are added monthly.

Will The "Freeze Period" Impact Me?

Use this chart to see how you might be impacted during the "freeze period" (January 24 - 29, 2019) or shortly after.

Borrow Materials (Books, etc.) X     You will be able to check out books and other materials at the Circulation desk as usual.
Renew Materials (Books, etc.)   X   From January 24 - 29, you will only be able to renew your materials in person or by phone. Online renewals will not workOnline renewals should be available after January 29.
Borrow or Add Course Reserves (Textbooks, etc.)   X  

You will be able to check out Course Reserves at the Circulation Desk as usual.
Instructors will be able to submit request forms in person as usual.
There will be no online catalog of course reserves from January 29 until later in the semester. Ask librarians or library staff for help finding reserve materials.

Request Interlibrary Loans     X From January 24 - 31, you will not be able to create new interlibrary loan requests. This is an unavoidable part of the migration. 
Reserve Group Study Rooms Online X Students can continue to use group study rooms but will not be able to reserve rooms online. From January 24 until later in the semester, study rooms can only be reserved in person or over the phone during library hours. 
Access Databases X     Our Combined Search and library system updates should not affect your online access or use of our many databases. Starting January 24, you will no longer be able to use the barcode number from your Normandale ID card to access databases from off campus. Use your StarID instead.
Use Combined Search or Book Search to Find Materials Available in the Library   X   From January 24 -29, Combined Search and Books Search (Library Catalog) will work but with two caveats. First, the status of library items will not be updated. Items that appear to be available may have been checked out, and items that appear to be unavailable may be sitting on the shelf. Call the Library or check the shelf to see if an item is available. Second, the call number for an item will only appear on the search results page, not on the item details page. After January 29, availability information and call numbers will be displayed normally in the new system. 

Do I need to do anything?


Information saved in your online library account (MnPALS) will not migrate to the new system. If you use the Favorites or Lists function of your online library account to save book lists, you will need to print, screen capture, or export that information prior to January 24. Follow our Instructions for Saving Your Favorites/Lists.

The new system will have a different web address. Any links or bookmarks you have saved (or appear on your assignment materials) to specific Combined Search searches or to Library Catalog records on the old systems will stop working a few weeks after the switch. You will need to update your saved URLs after January 29. This does not impact permanent links to database content on database or publisher sites.

Librarians and library staff have been working for months to prepare for the migration and minimize the impact on library users. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
