Nursing Assistant Certificate

The Nursing Assistant Certificate course prepares you to assist others with personal care needs and become a caring, compassionate Nursing Assistant .

This certificate course is approved by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and prepares students to take the National Nursing Assistant Training and Competency Evaluation Test.

Upon successful completion of the test, you are placed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry (NA/R).

What are the other requirements needed to become a nursing assistant?

Students will provide evidence of negative Tuberculosis(TB) status which meets the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) requirements. Proof of freedom from TB must be on official clinical or hospital letterhead.
Students will complete a Minnesota Department of Human Services Background study and must receive full clearance. Specific instructions on completing the study will be provided to enrolled students prior to the first day of class.
Communication skills (spoken and written) sufficient to understand, and be understood by, your patients. If you are uncertain about your communication skills please contact the course faculty to discuss your needs.
Nursing Assistants are required to perform physically demanding job duties including lifting. Students must meet clinical facility requirements including lifting of 50 pounds (or greater). Normandale is committed to providing reasonable accommodations. Students requesting accommodations are to contact the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) on the Normandale Campus.
Enrolled students must attend all class sessions (State requirement). Limited make up sessions, for emergencies only, are arranged at the instructor’s discretion.
