Nursing assistants are in high demand. Normandale offers a variety of sections to fit many schedules. Completion of NURS 1057 qualifies students to take the state of Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry exam. The majority of sections at Normandale integrate the home health aide content required for students to take the state of Minnesota Home Health Aide registry exam. NURS 1060 is inclusive of the NA course and the Home health Aide curriculum.

Normandale's Nursing Assistant Certificate course is approved by the Minnesota Department of Health, and prepares students to take the National Nursing Assistant Training and Competency Evaluation Test.

Upon successful completion of the test, students are placed on the Nursing Assistant Registry (NA/R).

The nursing assistant (NA/R) provides care under the direct supervision of licensed nurses. Students who successfully complete NURS 1060 are eligible to take the National NA/HHA examand be place on the

NA-R/HHA registry.

According to, there will be a need for about 9,260 new Nursing Assistants to meet market demand between 2010-2020. This includes the demand due to replacement (workers leaving the occupation or retiring) as well as growth. The Bureau of Labor Statistics website currently states that "Employment of nursing assistants is expected to grow 20% from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations."

Other Certificate Requirements

  • Earn a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 for college-level coursework (courses numbered 1000 and above) completed at Normandale.
  • Earn at least one third of the required certificate credits from Normandale. 

Nursing Assistant Registry

The Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide Curriculum will prepare students to sit for the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry Exam.

Students that wish to take the Registry exam in another state must check with that state's requirements before applying to take the Registry exam.
