Linking External URLs

Definition of an external link:

Any link that that is NOT a link to an x-page in our main CMS [Ingeniux].

So links to registering online [https://webproc.mnscu.edu/esession/authentication.do?campusId=156&postAuthUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwebproc.mnscu.edu%2Feservices%2Flogin.html%3Bjsessionid%3D320B9033205EE31E278783ECDCC7F4F3%3Fcampusid%3D156]

or the catalog [http://catalog.normandale.edu]

or the bookstore [http://bookstore.normandale.edu]

- are considered external links and should open in a new window.

Don't post or spell out the URL when linking: *

Never post, then link an entire URL. The reason is it not only takes up space on a page, but doesn't add anything to usability or give the user any information they are going to be able to use before clicking on it.

Not this:

Please visit www.kidney.org or call 651-636-7300 for more information or to make an appointment.

But this:

Please visit the National Kidney Foundation website or call 651-636-7300 for more information or to make an appointment.

When linking, be sure and include a link title and if it’s an external link, set the Target field to “new window (_blank)” :
