Name cards

You will present your name card to the announcer as you approach the stage for the presentation of candidates. You will receive your name card at Cap and Gown Distribution Day. Extras will be available the evening of Commencement; volunteers can assist you with phonetically writing your name.

Honors and Special Recognition

Honors
Honors will be awarded to graduates with a cumulative Normandale grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 - 3.49 in college-level courses (numbered 1000 and above) and high honors to graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. For purposes of the commencement ceremony, honors for spring degree candidates will be determined by the student’s cumulative GPA through fall semester. The final designation, as it appears on the transcript and diploma, will be based on grades earned in all Normandale college-level coursework.  Honors are not awarded to certificate completers.

Honor Societies
Kappa Beta Delta and Phi Theta Kappa honor society members are recognized at Commencement. You need to contact your advisor or college representative for information and items you may wish to purchase (e.g. stole).

Tassels and Medallions
You will receive one tassel with your cap and gown. It’s yours to keep! Here’s what the different tassel colors mean:

Tassel Color Meaning
BLACK & RED Normandale graduate or certificate completer*
WHITE Nursing*
LILAC Dental Hygiene*
SAGE Dietetic Technology*
GOLD Commencement Honors (GPA of 3.0 or higher, as of January 1st of this year)
NOTE: High Honors recipents will receive a medallion in addition to the gold tassel (GPA of 3.5 or higher, as of January 1st of this year).

* With the exception of the Honors tassel, you may purchase an additional tassel for $5, or you may swap your complimentary tassel at no charge.

Veterans
Currently active and veteran service members are invited to be recognized at Commencement. For more information, please contact us.

Distinguished Faculty Award
Graduates may nominate a professor, counselor or librarian who made a difference in their time at Normandale Community College. The recipient of the award will be announced and honored the evening of commencement.  You should expect to see a separate email in mid-late February entitled "Distinguished Faculty Award Nomination" that will provide you a direct link for your nomination.
