About Upward Bound

Since 1992, Upward Bound at Normandale Community College has helped high school students prepare for higher education. The Normandale Upward Bound program serves 66 students attending four partner high schools: Richfield, Shakopee, Southwest and Washburn.

Upward Bound members participate in a variety of activities ranging from tutoring to field trips to college visits, after school, on Saturdays and during the summer. Upward Bound (UB) is funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant program that has been helping students prepare for college and careers since 1965.

Jailin

"Upward Bound has helped me develop myself as a person. It's helped me come out of my shell...talking to people, being more confident, making friends with people that I wouldn't normally be friends with. Without Upward Bound I would be lost with this college ordeal. I'd be confused with the paperwork and I wouldn't understand the steps of getting into college. I also feel a community with both the staff and students. Every day I think about how UB has helped me and I appreciate everything the program has done for me!"

- Jailin Hernandez-Perez, Southwest High School, Class of 2016

"Without Upward Bound's support, especially the academic advisors and Jen, I would not be as focused in school. Jen helped me get ready for the ACT, which was more helpful than the ACT prep book. The academic advisors helped shaped my pathway to a better future. It also gave me an opportunity to learn about other cultures and meet new people. Not only did I get to meet new people, but I made some friends. I am thankful for all the UB staff's support for guiding me in Upward Bound to a more successful life."

- David Tu, Shakopee High School, Class of 2017
