When you scan the recent lists of fastest growing fields, you will come across Data Analytics (or Data Science). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, growth in a number of related fields to Data Analytics (or Data Science) through 2026 sits around 25 percent.
Normandale Community College is excited to be the only two-year college in the Twin Cities to offer an associate of science in Data Analytics.
The Data Analytics field offers the ability to collect information and gain knowledge with a variety of methods in an effort to answer a question or solve a problem. If you are passionate about a specific area or field, and get excited about gaining information and knowledge about some of the key questions in that field, a Data Analytics degree is a good match for you.
"We offer a good entry point for people who want to study methods to explore questions and analyze data to try to discover information that can lead to an answer," said Normandale Math Instructor Mark Ahrens. "I think a lot of data analytics is exploring. Our program will show people the foundational steps of how to do that with Math and Computer Science classes."
The Data Analytics degree, which Normandale launched recently, features core classes in C programming, algorithms and data structures, database management, data science, computer programming and statistical modeling. Normandale's goal is to provide an affordable and accessible entryway into the Data Analytics field.
The Data Analytics field has mostly been discussed conceptually at a masters or Ph.D. level," said Ahrens. "We want to bring that conversation to high school students, or people who want to get started at any age. If you are interested in business, science, sports, politics or any other specific areas, and are comfortable with computer programming and enjoy statistics and probability, our program is a great place to get started."
Normandale offers a perfect path to Data Analytics or Data Science bachelor's degrees that are rapidly growing in the state of Minnesota. You can transition from Normandale's program to a Minnesota State university with a bachelor's degree in Data Science at Metropolitan State University or Winona State University, or with a bachelor's degree in Data Analytics at Minnesota State University, Mankato or St. Cloud State University.
