WHAT EXACTLY IS HISTORY?

History is the study of the events and people of the past. At Normandale, you can focus on U.S. History, World History or General History.

WHY STUDY HISTORY ANYWAY?

The History Department's goal is to help students understand the historical past so that they can better fulfill their roles as historical actors in creating our future society. Understanding the past will help students enhance their capacity to be informed citizens and their ability to think critically.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A HISTORY DEGREE?

Students learn to gather, record, and analyze evidence to explain past events.

They learn about specific periods, issues, and cultures.

They can specialize in the history of a country or region.

Degrees & Certificates in History

Students seeking an Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Liberal Education with an emphasis must successfully complete the AA requirement. Emphasis requirements may also be used to satisfy the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum Goal requirements.

Students who plan to major in history at a 4-year institution would be well advised to take both the American and world history survey courses in order to be well prepared for upper division work. These emphases give students who wish to major in history at a four-year institution a strong base from which to build their degree program.
